The appearance of carbon fiber is usually smooth, and few people are likely to have seen the rough parts.
Carbon fiber may have white spots, bubbles, pores, pits and other defects on the surface after being molded, and will need to undergo a series of processing before delivery.
What causes the surface defects on carbon fiber products?

Carbon fiber products are mainly customized processing, involving a variety of molds, during which the molding process is mostly adopted. In the processing stage, defects such as white spots, bubbles, pores and pits may occur. The specific reasons are as follows:

1. Vacuum leakage: the vacuum bag is damaged, the sealing tape is not in place, the sealing of the mold is poor, etc.;

2. Incomplete infiltration: the resin gel time is too short, the viscosity is too high, the carbon fiber precursor is too thick, the resin content is too little, the resin spills too much, etc., resulting in the insufficient infiltration of carbon fiber;

3, operation error: in the process, the heating is too fast, the pressurization is too fast, the pressurization is too early, the heat preservation time is too short, the temperature is too high, and the operation problems lead to the insufficient forming of carbon fiber products.

Does the surface defect affect the use of carbon fiber products?

Too many surface defects of carbon fiber products are not necessarily proportional to the quality, but carbon fiber products are usually used in high-end manufacturing industries, which have high requirements for performance and appearance, and too many defects will affect the normal delivery.
In addition, many defects, more pores, more cracks, will affect the performance of carbon fiber products.

There is a professional term of carbon fiber porosity, used to summarize the infiltration effect of carbon fiber products. If the porosity is too high, it means that the resin content exceeds the standard or the distribution is uneven. In actual production, it must be standardized operation to avoid such a situation.
How to deal with surface defects of carbon fiber products?

Surface defects of carbon fiber products are a common phenomenon. Them can be processed and repaired. As long as the production process is normal, the yield of good products will not be too low.
For the defective carbon fiber products, it can be polished, cleaned and sprayed under the condition that the performance is not affected to eliminate the defects and ensure the appearance of neat.

The process includes water grinding, bottom coating, middle coating, top coating, grinding and polishing, with spraying and polishing repeated to ensure that the appearance of the carbon fiber is delivered to the delivery standard.

Smart new material reminder: If the defects pose a great threat to the performance, or after processing carbon fiber products fail to meet the delivery standards, must be scrapped, re-made.
